What is an ISP?

The letters ISP mean Internet Service Provider. Before the Internet became a commercial medium, only research organisations, universities and a few large corporations actually used it. All had dedicated connections to one of the Internet's component networks. Today many millions of users only have one computer to connect to the Internet and do so with a modem. They access the Internet through a service provider that has a dedicated permanent connection to the Internet backbone and allows individual users access to the Internet for a fee.
